What Is Spyware And How Does It Get On Your Computer?
With the internet continuing to evolve over time, the good comes with the bad as spyware is becoming
an increasingly nagging problem. Whether you agreed without noticing or did not agree,
spyware is extremely harmful to your computer files, the hard drive, and the computer as a whole. So what exactly is spyware you may be
wondering?
In general, spyware is any program that gathers personal information from your computer, delivers unwanted pop-ups, and alters your computer
configuration. Sometimes it appears on your computer without you agreeing to it, but a major concern is that many people agree without
realizing it.
Spyware has become not only software that spies on you, but is also software that provides annoyances outside of the normal virus world.
One of the most common forms of spyware is pop-ups and unwanted ads. They are annoying, slow down your computer, and can potentially harm
files on your computer.
Spyware began fairly recently with computer users doing it for their own enjoyment. After realizing the potential, many computer hackers
turned a simple amusement into making money at the expense of others. Although it is one of the most noticeable kinds of viruses on our
computers, it is often times difficult to find and fix.
Those who spread spyware at your expense do it in several different forms to make it difficult to realize. Some of the more common
methods used are spreading it when installed with other spyware, spreading it when bundled with free applications, or when installed with
malicious websites through flaws in internet explorer. There are ways to prevent this from spreading onto your computer, so make sure to do
the necessary research to protect your computer.
There are many harmful problems you may face if you do download spyware onto your computer. One of the biggest problems is direct
financial losses, which occur through the spyware “keylogger.” This is when someone steals your online banking passwords, and then
transfers the money to their account. Other unwanted problems can include slow system performance, display of unwanted content like
toolbars or popup ads, and a loss of privacy with personal history potentially exposed.
With the internet continuing to expand, it is exciting to watch the direction it is moving towards. However, at the same time it is
frightening to think computer users are becoming more and more knowledgeable and are capable of things like spyware. The most important
thing to know with spyware is that you must be aware. By knowing what spyware is and what causes it, you should be more aware of the
potential harm you may be causing yourself.
